According to statistics, South Korea imported about 311,000 tons of scrap steel in July, a decrease of 12% from the previous month and a decrease of 44% from the same period last year, which is next to the lowest level since August 2005.
Among them, Japan was the largest importer of South Korean scrap imports in July, with a total of about 200,000 tons, a decrease of 23% from the preceding month.
From January to July 2020, South Korea’s scrap imports totaled approximately 2.7 million tons, a decrease of 35% opposed to the same period last year. This shows that COVID-19 has hit South Korea’s steel demand.
